The rich flora of the region was already known from the 17th to 19th century, when the famous Vikogiatri (literally healers from the Vikos gorge) made famous the medicinal plants of the Vikos Gorge. These ikogiatri, were practical therapists and healers were traveling through the Balkans as far as Romania, Russia and Constantinople.Although the bulk of this tradition has been lost, locals in Zagori continue to collect and use medicinal plants in their everyday life. |
